Some of you may know, towards the end of last season the Town of Wrightsville Beach determined our setup service was outside of their ordinance as it is currently written. We’ve had many discussions with the town but have been unable to reach an agreement that would allow us to continue to set up beach equipment for our customers. With that in mind, we hired representation & began an effort to amend the ordinance. This process will culminate with our opportunity to present our amendment to the Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman this coming Thursday, April 8th.
What we’re trying to change:
The ordinance currently allows beach equipment rentals on the beach, but limits it to oceanfront hotels & resorts, as well as private clubs.. Our amendment would change that language to allow private vendors, who are properly permitted, to also provide this service. This amendment won’t allow us to set up a “beach stand” or “kiosk” on the sand, but simply walk our customer’s equipment out onto the beach to set it up each morning, then return in the evening to pick it up.
The Benefits:
We believe this change will benefit folks at the beach, who aren’t staying in an oceanfront resort or private club, by allowing them access to beach equipment services. This includes Wrightsville Beach residents, visitors who are renting houses or condos, people staying off the island, and folks who are making a day trip. All of which have made up our customer base in the past.
Here’s how you can help:
We need the board to know this amendment has support! While town officials have asked folks not to show up in person due to COVID, you can still show your support by sending an email on our behalf. This email can be as simple as, “I support the amendment brought forth by Cape Fear Beach Rentals in relation to the ability to set up beach equipment for visitors of Wrightsville Beach.” If you would like to write a brief note further expressing how this amendment would positively impact your visit to Wrightsville Beach, feel free. We also ask that you share this with anyone who has been, or will be positively impacted by this update to Wrightsville Beach’s ordinance. The more support we can garner, the better our chances will be.
Who should you send your email of support to:
We’re asking folks to send an email to the Board of Alderman and the Mayor, as well as a copy to back us. We’ll be entering these emails into the record at the meeting, and will most likely read a few to be sure the board understands why this change is needed. Here are the members of the Board & their email addresses:
Darryl Mills – Mayor – dmills@towb.org
Hank Miller – Mayor Pro Tem – hmiller@towb.org
Ken Dull – Alderman – kdull@towb.org
Zeke Partin – Alderman – zpartin@towb.org
Jeff DeGroote – Alderman – jdegroote@towb.org
Brian Eades – Town Attorney – briane@cmlawfirm.com
When should you email:
It has been recommended that folks send their email the few days leading up to the meeting between this coming Monday, April 5th and Thursday, April 8th. This is so it will be fresh on the Board member’s mind as they enter the meeting. Of course, if it’s more convenient to send it over the weekend, feel free to do so. Again, please “CC” capefearbeachrentals@gmail.com so we can retain a copy of your email.
We really appreciate your support and hope to be able to continue to provide our service for you moving forward. Please feel free to reply to this email or give us a call if you have any questions.
Thanks again and we hope you all have a wonderful summer!
